This week is National Dog Bite Prevention Week.
Keeping their pets from biting innocent people should always be a dog owner’s priority, but sadly this is not always the case. More than 4.5 million people in the United States suffer dog bites every year. Most of these victims are young children and many of the incidents are completely preventable.
Postal workers are also in danger of sustaining dog bite injuries. In 2012, almost six thousand postal workers were attacked by dogs while trying to deliver the mail.
When dogs bite innocent people, their owners are the ones who can be held liable for the injuries that occur. To prevent being bitten by a dog, do not make any moves it may perceive as threatening, don’t put your hands near its mouth, and always respect their personal space. Being aware of how the dog feels can allow you to avoid a painful and injurious dog bite.
